Tensions Rise in Carolina Panthers Front Office
The Carolina Panthers have had a rough ending to their 2017-18 season both on and off the field. Sexual harassment claims started to become national news in mid December resulting in Jerry Richardson immediately putting the franchise up for sale. That whole ordeal was followed by a first round loss to the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. After we started to settle into the off season, GM Marty Hurney was thrown under the bus by his ex-wife for domestic violence.
Jerry Richardson always had a polarizing reputation within the National Football League. Known for his stern policies and high character standards for his players, it was surprising to hear the way in which he treated his female employees throughout his twenty plus year ownership of the franchise. But we already know enough about that story.
Yesterday, General Manager Marty Hurney was placed on unpaid leave due to his wives allegations of harassment last week. In her complaint, she said Hurney was “extremely controlling and was verbally and emotionally abusive”. She also said “My privacy has been violated for the past seven years with Martin’s behaviors of tracking me, my pets and violating my property,” In this case, the Panthers two most important management figures have been accused of some serious character flaws. This is concerning considering the “high integrity” the organization prides itself on.
Even though she ended up withdrawing her complaint, this behavior from Richardson and Hurney is down right creepy. The details that have been released about both cases have kind of reminded me of myself when I was in middle school. Super cringeworthy and not smooth whatsoever. Maybe new management will not be so bad after all.
