Yuck! 7 Disgusting Facts About Swimming Pools That You Can Never Un-Know
Swimming pools are awesome, but you can’t help but wonder if they’re truly as clean as they look.
From an article courtesy of Bustle, we’ve gathered a list of some disgusting facts about swimming pools and their users’ habits that might make you think twice before going in a public pool. Despite commonly-known pool ethics, such as doing your business outside of the pool and always showering before swimming, pools obviously can’t be totally pristine. Now, before you read any further, keep in mind that this is some nasty stuff! However, for those with strong-stomachs, take a look at what we’ve found:
- The stuff that makes your eyes sting? It’s bodily fluids — And we all thought it was chlorine! Better get some goggles or just keep your eyes closed.
- The number of people getting sick from swimming in public pools is on the rise — Maybe next time you’re sick, do the rest of us a favor and stay out of the water.
- The chemical smell of a pool does not mean it’s clean — We could’ve guessed this much, but apparently the real smell comes from the chemicals binding with the nasty stuff in the pool. The more the merrier?
- Twenty percent of Americans pee in pools — And this is just the percentage of people who fessed up to it!
- Dirty pools are more common than you think — According to a report released by the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 12% of swimming pools had to be immediately closed upon inspection due to serious health code violations.
- There is such a thing as “hot tub rash” — Yikes… that’s one term you probably could have lived without knowing. This skin infection is caused by hanging out in poorly maintained hot tubs.
- There’s poop in the water — Yep, you read that right. Apparently, a study conducted by the CDC found that 58% of pools were at least somewhat contaminated.
