Will There Be a ‘The Mask’ Sequel Now that Cameron Diaz’s Back?
If there’s one thing we didn’t expect to see in 2025, it’s Cameron Diaz coming out of her cozy hiatus and making a comeback. She co-stars in the aptly titled Back in Action with Jamie Foxx, The Netflix film is about married former CIA spies who are “back in action” after their secret identities are exposed.
Seeing Diaz back in action (okay, we promise that’s the last time we’ll use that pun!), it seems she’s back to doing what she loves most. But is she open to making a sequel to her and Jim Carrey’s 1994 movie The Mask?
Cameron Diaz: Open to Doing The Mask Sequel
In an interview with Access Hollywood (via Variety) Diaz said she’s open to doing a sequel. “If Jim’s [Carrey] on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one.” For those who have not yet seen The Mask, (what’s wrong with you?) it’s a film that follows Carrey, a bank teller whose life turned upside down, at times, literally, when he discovers a mask with the spirit of a trickster. Cameron Diaz was his love interest, a nightclub singer.
Last month, in an interview with ComicBook.com, while promoting Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Carrey said he’s also open to doing a sequel. “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.” He added, “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.”
Charlie’s Angels 3?
Aside from doing a sequel to The Mask, Diaz also said she’s willing to do another Charlie’s Angels film with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. “It would be amazing. It would be really amazing,” per The Hollywood Reporter. Foxx said he would be happy to join the cast as Bosley since it will be impossible to cast Bill Murray again given the history between him and Lucy Liu; Liu said the actor allegedly hurled “inexcusable and unacceptable” insults at her.
However, fans of the 2000 and 2003 Charlie’s Angels movies might still not get a third installment, even though Diaz is back from her hiatus, as Liu mentioned in an interview with Variety (via the New York Post), “I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible. There have been so many iterations, even after the fact … In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since then.”
Here’s hoping Diaz and Barrymore, who also said in countless interviews she’s open to reprising her role as Dylan Sanders, change Liu’s mind about doing Charlie’s Angels 3!
