How Shaun White Surprised Nina Dobrev With His Proposal

In an interview with Vogue, White shared that he already had two failed proposals. The first was during their summer vacation this year but was postponed when Dobrev had a biking accident in May. The second was during a trip to South Africa but their friends spoiled the surprise by asking repeatedly if he’s going to pop the question.
How Shaun White Pulled It Off
So, how did White manage to follow the wise words of Beyoncé: “If you like it, then you should’ve put a ring on it?” As reported by E! News, he decided to make the event simple and intimate (and without friends who’d reveal the secret). However, before the dinner, Dobrev wanted to postpone because she wasn’t feeling well. White, who’s quick on his feet, asked his publicist to send Dobrev a fake dinner invitation from Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. He knew it was an invitation Dobrev wouldn’t want to miss.
Dobrev’s Reaction
Per Fox News, Dobrev accepted the invitation because it “Looked so legitimate.” She joked that White did a good job in making the invite look from Wintour. She only realized what was happening when she walked into The Golden Swan Restaurant in New York with White standing underneath a floral arch.
“I went into shock,” Dobrev revealed. “I just froze and stared at him,” adding that he “said all the right things.” No wonder she said yes!
Shaun White revealed she knew Dobrev was nervous. “I knew she was nervous because when she’s nervous she’ll make jokes. She’s like, ‘So, wait, Anna’s not here?’” She might not have had dinner with Wintour that night, but she went home with a brand-new fiancé.
Friends and Fans’ Reactions
White and Dobrev both posted on their respective social media accounts the good news. White captioned it “She said YES” with a ring and infinity symbol emoji, while Dobrev wrote, “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé” with the same emojis White used.
Friends were quick to congratulate the two and Dobrev’s TVD co-stars, Paul Wesley, Candice King and Kat Graham sharing their best wishes. Other celebrity friends including Sam Claflin, Sophie Turner, and Paris Hilton also celebrated the engagement. Paul Jason Klein of LANY also congratulated the two and even called Dobrev White’s “another gold medal.”
