The First Brain Surgeons Were Barbers
For hundreds of years, brain surgery was conducted by barbers. For centuries brain surgery was considered a craft, not a profession. In medieval times barber surgeons were medical practitioners performing surgery on soldiers during war times. You guessed it, many would have no formal learning, and were often illiterate. Yikes! Another interesting fact as of this year, there are only a few black women with the title of neurosurgeons.
It’s impressive that the 33 black female neurosurgeons in the United States are pioneering and blazing. These beautiful women are encouraging future generations of neurosurgeons, just like the incredible work of Michaux Kilpatrick, a neurosurgeon at Novant Health Brain & Spine Surgery in Kernersville. During a radio interview with Francene Marie interviewed, Dr. Kilpatrick treats medical ailments involving the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves in the arms and legs. The nervous system is an extremely complex and important part of the human body. Our nervous system controls both voluntary and involuntary body functions, including movement, thinking and decision-making, sensory information processing, and even emotions. It is responsible for sending signals throughout the body and communicating with the brain to ensure that the body can function properly and efficiently. Without the nervous system, our body would not be able to move, think, or feel.
