Many are delighted that Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law. That took bipartisan action in the House and Senate which made historic legislation. In these cases, it’s good to have wraparound support even from religious communities and some businesses. Legalizing same-sex marriage began in the 90s across the country. Civil unions for same-sex couples were around but mostly hidden and considered separate but equal. At the federal level, couples were denied access to more than 1,100 federal rights and responsibilities associated with the institution. Not until the Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law in 1996, defining marriage by the federal government as between a man and a woman. This way each state was allowed to deny marriage equality.
Talking about same-sex marriage was taboo in many households. But now, love scenes are popping up in shows and movies with partners of the same sex. These beautiful communities want us to provide legal protection for LGBTQ+ communities. That may take a few more years to catch on, but Biden signing the new act will give a warning to those wanting to bring harm. What is your story about fair and equal treatment? We want to know.
