Child Labor On Cocoa Farms
You can’t make this up, so do your research before buying Halloween candy. It seems that everyday we find out or gently reminded that many of our favorite brands use child labor. Most of us want our money to stretch with cheap purchases from the grocery store, retail stores and online storefronts, but when we discover child labor was used, we cringe. Chances are likely that we’ll still buy knowing someone suffered in the process. Well, the system is working the way it always has, someone must be taken advantage of to make a few extra dollars. Although most children in West Africa work on cocoa farms before the age of 16. But some reports disclose children working at five years old. It would be nice if the children could at least earn real money to live, but I’ve read wages of $2 a day. According to Odyssey, they have Nestle, Godiva, Hershey and Mars bars on their list.
The numbers are pretty bazar with 1.8 million children forced to labor on cocoa farms in Western Africa. There are several lawsuits against our popular candy makers. Children living in areas with Cocoa farms are taken most times, against their will to work. Lawsuits claim that these companies would pay these children, but not sure they’ll do the right thing.
