Donations Sought As Pilot Mountain Fire Continues To Burn

A fire, first reported Saturday night, continues to burn atop of Pilot Mountain. Fox 8 reports that the fire first began at the Grindstone Trail. At the time of this article over 200 acres have burned. Pilot Mountain State Park spans 3,700 acres in Surry and Yadkin counties. The recognizable 'knob' at the pinnacle of the mountain burned overnight. More firefighters from across the state will be on hand Monday to help in the efforts. Planes began to tackle the Pilot Mountain fire were scheduled to take off around 10 am this morning.

However, the weather is not expected to cooperate. Dry and windy conditions are predicted for the park today which will make the job that much more difficult. Pilot Mountain State Park is expected to remain closed all week as officials continue to fight the fire.

With long days of difficult work ahead of firefighters Evan Cockerham, Pilot Mountain Mayor is calling on the public to help. He took to Facebook Sunday night to update the public. You can view his post below.  He encouraged anyone who noticed burning to call authorities and also asked for donations to assist the firefighters.

Fingers crossed the fire will be extinguished soon and the area can begin to recover.
