The Cleveland Indians Change Name To ‘Cleveland Guardians’
In the US, corporations are reevaluating their racist caricatures and stereotypical names as part of a larger cultural change. With times changing and the baseball team The Cleveland Indians have officially unveiled their new team name: the Cleveland Guardians.
The team made the announcement Friday morning, with a promotional video narrated by actor Tom Hanks. The new name is inspired by the ‘Guardians of Traffic’ sculptures that line the city’s Hope Memorial Bridge. It was chosen from a list of more than 1,200 potential names. The Cleveland club will retain its colors and there will be a news conference at 2 p.m. ET to detail the name change.
The team announced back in December that it would change its name after this season. They will officially become the Guardians next year.
