NC Cities Pass Ordinance Banning Hairstyle Discrimination In Workplace
The Durham City Council has been one of the first in NC to unanimously pass an ordinance banning employers from discriminating against people with hairstyles including afros, dreadlocks, and braids. This kind of discrimination is one that many Black people, especially women, have faced in the workplace.
The ordinance also bans discrimination based on gender identity, sexuality, and military status. Greensboro City Council passed a similar ordinance on Tuesday, as did Orange County. But Orange County’s ordinance did not specifically address hairstyles.
City officials are also meeting Thursday to help push the U.S. Senate to vote on the CROWN Act, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair. The CROWN Act is a federal bill that bans hair-based discrimination. It was already passed through the U.S. House back in September.
