Remembering Charley Pride
Country music legend Charley Pride, who passed away from complications of Covid 19 on December 12, was laid to rest in a private memorial service in Dallas TX this past weekend. Growing up in a shack, while sharing a bed with 4 others Charley had two paths out of the objective poverty that crippled African Americans in Sledge, MS. Before he was a country music icon, he was a minor league baseball pitcher in the negro league for the Memphis Red Sox, and the Birmingham Barons. He is also currently part owner of the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Team. An arm injury cut his baseball career short, but while serving in the military Pride honed his act while performing at the officers club in Colorado. It all paid off in 1971 with his first No. 1 hit “Kiss An Angel Good Morning”.
You’ll see that he had thirty no.1 hits, and 3 Grammy’s later he’s a Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and a Country Music Hall of Famer. Not bad for a black man, performing in a predominantly white genre. Rest In Peace Charley Pride.
