DIY Paint Projects
With spring melting into summer its time for change, and since we’re spending more time indoors, how about a little change of scenery? It’s amazing how a coat of paint can transform a room, and the way we feel walking into it and painting it yourself can be cost effective and so easy to do. Here are some steps to make sure your DIY paint project looks perfectly professional.
1. Plan Ahead
Map out your vision, that is, what do you want the vision to look like. Do you want the room done all in one color or will you jazz it up with an accent wall? And don’t forget the ceiling. Can it use a coat of paint too?
2. Choose the Palette
This can be the most fun and the most overwhelming part. Want to experiment with bold color? Go for it! Classic neutrals or soft pretty pastels? Are you going with a warm or cool tone? Will the new color go with the art and furniture already in the room? How will lighting factor into the finished look? These are things to think about. I suggest grabbing a few samples and taking them home to get a feel of the color in your space.
3. Get Materials
It is important to get everything you need. Every project is unique but here are your must haves:
• Paint
• Primer
• Paint roller
• Paint roller extension pole
• Drop cloths
• Paintbrushes
• Paint tray
• Sandpaper
• Painter’s tape
• Rags
• Putty knife
Also, know how much paint you’ll need before you get started. Factor in the time your project will take based on your skill level, the size of the room and your color choice.
4. Prep the Room
Protect your furniture and family heirlooms by moving them out of the line of fire or covering them with plastic. We also need to cover the floors with a drop cloths to avoid any unnecessary clean up. Ventilation is important. We don’t want to pass out in the middle of our DIY! Once the room is prepped and ready, its time to let the paintbrushes fly!
5. Have Fun
Take your time and enjoy the experience. Remember, it isn’t permanent. If the color doesn’t work out like you thought it would, you can always paint over it. The point is to raise the vibrations of your home and make it even more beautiful. Don’t stress!
