Teenage Boy Goes Blind After Eating a Diet of Pringles and French Fries
If you’re thinking about switching your diet up to include more Pringles, fries, and white bread – don’t.
Per CNN, a 17-year old boy in Bristol’s picky diet led to his blindness. Since elementary school, the boy apparently, only eats french fries, Pringles, white bread, and slices of processed ham and sausage.
He initially visited the doctor at 14, complaining of tiredness, but everything appeared normal. By 17, the problem intensified. “His vision has worsened to the point of blindness by 17 years of age, and doctors identified vitamin B12 deficiency, low copper and selenium levels, a high zinc level, reduced vitamin D level and bone density.”
The medical term for the boy’s issues is nutritional optic neuropathy, which is a dysfunction of the optic nerve.
The child’s vision damage is permanent.
CNN also adds, “Researchers say that poor diet and reduced intake of minerals caused vision loss in the case, and warn that nutritional optic neuropathy could become more common due to the consumption of junk food.”
Researchers also warn that vegans should take supplements for vitamin B12 to avoid issues.
