North Carolina City Has 300% More Juveniles Charged in Homicides in 2024
One North Carolina city is having quite some troubles with juveniles connected to homicides lately. A report from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department has come out and the midyear crime stats are quite interesting. In general, crime overall is on the rise this year. Violent crimes specifically are up and causing a bit of frenzy in the city.
According to officials, one of the reasons for such a rise in crime in the city of Charlotte is due to the rapid increase in population the city is seeing. It’s suspected that hundreds of people are relocating to Charlotte per day! How insane is that? The recent report shows that there has been about a 36% increase in homicides and an 8% increase in assaults with a deadly weapon.
Juvenile Statistics in North Carolina
Unfortunately, juveniles are being charged with these homicides more than ever. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is reporting that this year alone, so far 12 juveniles have been charged with homicide. On the other end of that, 7 juveniles have been victims of homicides so far in 2024. Last year, 2023, there was a total of 4 juvenile victims for the entire year. In 2023, there were a total of 3 juveniles charged with homicides with the total already at 12 for 2024, causing the 300% increase.
“A lack of space to house juveniles should not be an excuse for allowing repeat offenders to rack up dozens or even hundreds of charges by the time they’re 17 years old,” CMPD said
The year is already off to a rough start, but hopefully, things can change for the youth in Charlotte to prevent further increases over the next few years. Check out the full news report here to see what else CMPD had to say.
