Rent is stupidly expensive these days. And it's far from a buyer's market in real estate. So it's no surprise that many people are attempting to wait out this unfortunate situation by living at home. I'll be the first to admit I did it for a few years, and while yes parents can drive you crazy, it was a great way to save money. And if you want to have any savings on an entry-level salary in this economy, I can't see a world where you don't live at home for at least a year. If you can afford it good for you. What do you do for work? Let us all know, please! While I'm not shocked much of Gen Z is currently residing with family, I wouldn't have guessed it was a North Carolina city with the highest percentage of Gen Zers still living at home.
But according to research from Rent Cafe, Raleigh tops the list for the most Gen Zers who still live at home. According to their data, 87% of the nearly 180,000 "zoomers" in the North Carolina capital city still live at home. Charlotte ranked tenth in the demographic with 76% still living with family members. The good news? Neither city made the top 20 for the millennial demographic. So there is still hope I guess?
Nationally 20% of Millennials and 68% of Gen Z-ers are still residing with family members. While I've said I completely understand it, and even support the decision. This should raise red flags. It shouldn't have to be the norm. Businesses should pay employees enough to live comfortably. And housing costs, well they shouldn't be this outrageous. It's certainly a different world than when our parents and grandparents were starting out. These days both millennials and Gen Zers have seemingly been set up to fail. That's not political, it's just the cold hard truth.
Are you still living at home or know someone who is? You can read more about the methodology and the results of this study from Rent Cafe here.
