When I saw this story I almost stood up and cheered. However, in our case, it's a day late and thousands of dollars too short. LOL. Apparently there's a new bill pushing to allow some South Carolina colleges to give in-state tuition rates to students in North Carolina and Georgia. That is particularly interesting to me since we have a son attending Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. And, let me tell you the difference between in state and out of state rates is huge. We will get to our story in just a minute. But, House Bill 3325, if passed could go into effect this fall. It has been approved by subcommittee. Now, it goes to the full House Education and Public Works Committee. Six schools allowed to extend the rates to bordering states include Winthrop, University of South Carolina Aiken and Coastal Carolina University. Check the bill for all schools.
We lived in North Carolina when our son started Coastal in 2020. But, in the Fall of 2021, we moved across the state line into Indian Land, South Carolina. The process of applying for in state rates was tedious, requiring a one year waiting period. Then, we had to provide dozens of documents proving we registered property, cars, paid state taxes. We had to send notarized statements and a multitude of mortgage or lease agreements. However, we completed the process and got in state status this Spring. The savings is worth it. Although, our son is about to head into his Senior year after this semester. And, now we learn we might have been able to get the rates regardless. But, it's wonderful news for families in North Carolina and Georgia with students in South Carolina colleges.
List: Best South Carolina Colleges And Universities
What are the best colleges in South Carolina? There's no perfect college because no one student wants or needs the exact same things. What makes a particular academic institution stand out to one person may be exactly what another doesn't want. And choosing which school that is can be a daunting task. Even creating a list of universities to visit and apply to can be overwhelming. That's why Niche creates its Best Colleges rankings each year. And they have released their rankings for 2022-2023.
The Best Colleges ranking is based on rigorous analysis of academic, admissions, financial, and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education along with millions of reviews from students and alumni. The ranking compares more than 1,000 top colleges and universities in the U.S. This year's rankings have reduced the weight of ACT/SAT scores to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. So back to South Carolina. We've got some major recognizable names when it comes to universities. But you can probably guess the top 2, it's the two largest schools in the state and with the most prolific sports teams. Like many states, sports are a big driver for many of the dozens of colleges and universities across the state of South Carolina. It was a huge factor in my college selection. One that was the best decision I ever made.
