Beware North Carolina Island Could Be Home To Pieces Of Unexploded Bombs
A North Carolina Island is closed to visitors due to the possibility of unexploded bombs. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune officials are asking people to stay off Browns Island for the time being due to potential dangers. This also includes creeks and tributaries in the area. The precaution is being taken due to live-fire training exercises frequently occurring in the area.
Browns Island is located in Onslow County.
“Over the years, there have been thousands of live rounds of ammunition aimed at this area,” said Nicholas Klaus, range control officer, MCB Camp Lejeune told CBS 17. “It may look like just a piece of rusty metal, but it could be an unexploded bomb. If you shift it the wrong way or it just decides now is the time to go off, it could destroy your boat or even cause serious injuries or death.”
The North Carolina Island contains unexploded ordnance which is dangerous to anchoring boaters or individuals traveling on the island. Both of these activities are prohibited on the island as well as on the creeks and tributaries leading to it. Warning signs mark the area as off-limits but some still choose to ignore the warnings. The area however is regularly patrolled by the Coast Guard as well as military police. Violators can be fined as much as $5,000 and serve up to six months in jail.
