Dr. Dre Addresses NFL Changes On Halftime Show
Dr. Dre has addressed the changes the NFL wanted to make for the LVI Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Dre performed alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and special guest 50 Cent. As Dre said in a recent interview, the NFL wanted some “minor changes” surrounding some of the lyrics in the songs on the setlist.
“There were a few things that we had to change, but it was like really minor things,” he explained to TMZ. “Em taking the knee that was him doing that on his own and there was no problem with that.”
Per Music News NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy knew that Eminem was going to take a knee during his performance in solidarity with the former NFL player and activist Colin Kaepernick.
“We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that,” McCarthy explained.
Dre says that he was expecting the NFL to heavily censor the songs but was pleasantly surprised when they only made “minor changes.” Among the changes was Kendrick’s reference to L.A. gangs and his “And we hate po-po” line in “Alright.” Instead, he sang, “We hate,” waited on the beat, and then continued on to the next verse, “Wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho.”
Dre says he gets why they called for that to be removed.
After the game, Dre celebrated with actor Don Cheadle and Mary J, and in the TMZ interview, he spilled that he will be helping her with her next project. The R&B singer just dropped her 14th studio album titled Good Morning Gorgeous on Feb. 11 ahead of her Super Bowl set.
