Charlotte Make The Top Cities List For Street Art
Street art has been gaining in popularity for a few years now. Charlotte even has self-guided and guided art walks you can participate in. I did a Southend one last year and I highly recommend it. I personally love seeing our city decorated with art, it brings such a vibrant and upbeat vibe to day-to-day life. And this is a trend that has been seen across the country. Internet searches for ‘spray paint street art’ and ‘mural’ have more than doubled over the past 12 months. As a result, online art gallery, SINGULART took notice and has pulled social media data to reveal the top 12 street art hotspots in the U.S. And I’m delighted to report that Charlotte made the street art hotspot list!
The top 12 cities for street art:
- New York City, New York – 307,000
- Chicago, Illinois – 76,300
- Portland, Oregon – 57,200
- San Francisco, California – 38,800
- Austin, Texas – 26,600
- San Diego, California – 26,600
- Washington, D.C – 15,300
- Boston, Massachusetts – 13,600
- Los Angeles, California – 11,900
- Charlotte, North Carolina – 6,930
- Ann Arbor, Michigan – 5,790
- Nashville, Tennessee – 5,680
Contributing to these rankings were Google Search data for ‘spray paint street art’ and ‘mural’, social media hashtag data on terms such as #streetart, #urbanart, and #graffitiart from Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook over the past three months, and engagement actions include likes, comments, shares, retweets, and favorites.
With the likes of ‘Hammer Boy’ by Banksy on the Upper West Side and the Wall of Fame situated in the Bronx, it comes as no surprise that New York City has been crowned the street art capital of America. NYC brought in 307,000 social media engagements over the past three months, 304% more than Chicago at 76,300.
Portland takes third place, totaling 57,200 engagements. With the Alberta arts district bursting with colorful masterpieces and the ‘Art fills the void’ mural, it’s definitely a worthy ranking, and one worth visiting if you haven’t before.
As a state, California ranks better than any others in terms of appearances with San Francisco (38,800), San Diego (26,600), and Los Angeles (11,900) all breaking the top 10. Nashville just scrapes the bottom, with posts totaling 5,680 since June 2021. And of course, we have to highlight Charlotte at number 10 on the list for street art!
Commenting on the hotspots, Marion Sailhen, Head Curator at SINGULART, says: “In recent years, street art has become much more accepted and appreciated as an art form, compared to when it first emerged in the 1970s and is often a huge form of expression for many. Artists such as Banksy, Vhils, and Kobra have really paved the way for the urban art movement and it’s great to see how they’ve inspired some of the artists on SINGULART.”
