Netflix’s New Docuseries ‘This is Pop’ Shows The True Evolution of Pop Music
Look no further if you’ve been looking for a well-rounded visual representation of how the music you love was created. Netflix recently released a new docuseries that dives into the pop music industry. The show is called ‘This Is Pop,’ and it takes you on a wild journey of the ever-changing music industry. You will be taken on a musical journey through eight stunning episodes that will give you a new perspective on the music you listen to daily.
With Boyz II Men as the opening act, Netflix introduces an in-depth look at the group’s pioneering role in pop music. The episodes continue with insight into British pop, Swedish pop, the time of autotune, the rise of music festivals, country music that goes pop/R&B, and oh yeah…lots of ABBA. (Which I am always here for) ‘This is Pop’ examines the different forms of racism, sexism, and classism that have affected artists.
One of my favorite episodes is when we see Lil Nas X turning country music into pop. We all remember his number one song, ‘Old Town Road’, and how the world went crazy for it. There was tons of back and forth with Billboard that the song shouldn’t have been on the country music charts because it wasn’t ‘country’ and the back story is eye-opening.
Fun story, when I was younger, my father had a CD that featured the song, “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men. The disk broke in the car’s player and it was forever stuck on that song. This song ended up being #1 for 14 weeks on the Billboard Pop charts. Needless to say, I’m a big, fan but also cringe at the appearance of that song. Streaming this show is definitely recommended. If you love music you’ll love learning about how some of your favorite tunes made it big. I just need to say thank you Netflix, because I love music and its history.
