North Carolina Drivers Ranked 5th Best In America
A new study ranks North Carolina Drivers 5th best in America. Yes, you did read that correctly, yes I had to read it twice too.
The data isn’t based on traffic statistics and violations, not things like whether people know that when a traffic light is out to treat it like a four-way stop. Newsflash they don’t but it’s what you should do.
The study was done by a group of auto accident and truck accident lawyers out of Chicago.
Statistics included were:
- DUI arrests per 100,000
- Accident fatalities per 100,000
- How many drivers are uninsured
- Number of Google searches related to terms like “how to get out of a ticket” and “car accident lawyer”
North Carolina has 136 DUI arrests per 100,000 residents. There are just 16 collision fatalities per 100,000 in North Carolina, one of the lowest rates in the country. And 94% of North Carolina drivers are insured, one of the highest rates in the nation.
South Carolina didn’t fare near as well coming in at the 8th worst in the country. New Mexico, Alabama, and Arkansas were the top three.
New York has the best drivers in the country according to the study with Pennsylvania and Massachusetts rounding out the top three.
There do seem to be regional trends. Of the top ten states with the worst drivers, almost half were southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and South Carolina. This is due to their low to average DUI arrests but extremely high rates of fatality.
It seems, using these metrics, that the best drivers in America in the northeast. In addition to New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania- New Jersey, and Connecticut also ranked high. All had extremely low rates of DUI arrests, fatalities, and uninsured drivers.
You have to wonder if the accessibility of public transportation and the tendency to live in densely populated areas contributed to the Northeast’s trends.
Do you agree with North Carolina drivers are the 5th best? Does South Carolina being so low surprise you?
