Liam Hemsworth’s Kidney Stones Has Him Rethinking ‘Vegan’
While many vegans say they’re very healthy, the diet didn’t work out well for Liam Hemsworth. In fact, he had to rethink it after suffering from kidney stones. Liam has been plant-based eating for almost four years when he started feeling lethargic. Soon after, while doing press for “Isn’t It Romantic,” he ended up with a kidney stone. He called it one of the most painful weeks of his life.
This Hemsworth brother said he had to look at what he was eating. “Once you get one kidney stone, you have a 50 percent chance of getting another one if you continue eating the way you were eating,” he explained. “My particular kidney stone was a calciumoxalate kidney stone. It forms from having too much oxalate in your diet. Oxalates are really high in a lot of vegetables, specifically spinach, almonds, beetroot, potatoes.”
At that point, Liam thought he was being super healthy by having five handfuls of spinach, almond milk, almond butter, and vegan protein in a smoothie every morning. The stones made him reconsider that. “You have to figure out what works best for your body,” he noted. “If something works well for a period, great, keep doing it. If something changes and you’re not feeling great, you’ve got to reassess it and then figure it out.”
