Is there anything that Whoopi Goldberg can’t do? The actress, comedian, author and TV host has been dominating the entertainment field since the early ‘80s. Today is her 62nd birthday (November 13) and, in honor of her big day, here are 12 facts about the superstar.
- She was the first woman to host the Academy Awards by herself in 1994.
- One of her first jobs was applying makeup to dead bodies! How creepy.
- Whoopi has won a Tony in 2002 (Produced the Best Musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), a Grammy in 1985 (Best Comedy Performance Single or Album, Spoken or Musical for “Original Broadway Show Recording”), Oscar (Best Actress in a Supporting Role Ghost), and a Golden Globe (Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture “Ghost” and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama The Color Purple).
- She is only one of four actresses that has an Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy.
- She partially owns Mary’s Kitchen in Malibu, California, which is a store and kitchen. All the furnishing and staff are all from New York City.
- She also owns her own production company called, One Ho Productions.
- Sister Act is a crowd favorite! Believe it or not, she actually did all of her own singing for the role. Impressive, right?!

- She’s left-handed!
- Whoopi’s The View co-star Joy Behar is said to be the person who recommended the actress for the host position. She replaced Rosie O’Donnell back in 2007.
- The actress’ real name is Caryn. She came up with her stage name “Whoopi” back when she was performing standup. She apparently would often be caught being gassy backstage and reminded people of a whoopee cushion.
- Three of her films: The Color Purple, Ghost and Toy Story 3 have all been nominated for an Academy Award. What an honor!
