Lexi’s Listens is a new weekly post I’ll do with the songs I’ve been singing to nonstop! My hope is that if you’ve never heard of these, you might discover some new hits to listen to.
This week, we have a mix of new songs, brand new songs, and some pretty old throwbacks. The throwbacks come from the soundtrack to one of my favorite movies (and books) of all time: The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Because the movie takes place primarily during the winter, I always get reminded of David Bowie’s “Heroes” and The Smith’s “Asleep” during colder weather.
A brand new song with a brand new video out TODAY is Saweetie’s new song with H.E.R. called Closer. I have become obsessed with it because it is so cute and vibey!! I think Saweetie and H.E.R. sound really great together.
A similar vibe comes from The Marias with their song “Cariño”. With a more bedroom pop sound, the lead singer of “Cariño” reminds me of Clairo. Although I’m just discovering it, this song came out in 2018.
“Chapstick” by COIN and Charli XCX’s “Good Ones” are recent songs that I am really starting to love more and more. “Chapstick” has a classic-rock-sounding intro and guitar throughout. But, the beat is dancey, like all the best COIN songs. Meanwhile, “Good Ones” has a Top 40 sound and reminds me a LOT of Marina’s songs, like How to Be A Heartbreaker – similar sounds in both.
I feel like the music you listen to you reveals more about your current headspace than we might think, so here’s a little look into the music playing in my mental elevator currently playing 24/7. This week’s Lexi’s Listens:
