Chances are you have been to many of the best-known places in North Carolina.  But what about a town that is just unbelievable to visit but just doesn’t have its own public relations team to tell you about it? Experts say this is the most underrated North Carolina City.

The folks over at Prevention magazine put together a list of cities across the United States that are worth your time to visit, but that you just never hear a lot about. I just love discovering towns and for the first time experiencing their beauty, as well as the food, the activities. Often times when you find these places everyone in the family thinks, “where has this town been all my life?”

What exactly does “underrated” mean?  Google says it simply means not rated or valued highly enough.  If you are like me and on a budget, my travel these days consists of places I can get to in a car in 8 hours or less. And with the vacation season coming up, it’s the perfect time to take a look at these underrated locations.  While we were at it we went ahead and found out the underrated towns in South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.  By absolute chance, I have been to this underrated town in North Carolina.  We actually ended up there when we got lost.  It is charming, beautiful and one of the most underrated parts of the Outer Banks.

You can check out the whole list here or keep reading to see which towns you need to add to your bucket list ASAP.

  • Duck, North Carolina

    Prevention says;

The Outer Banks have long been underrated as a vacation destination for spring breakers and folks generally seeking a reprieve from their busy lives, and Duck is one of the foremost towns in the OBX. There are opportunities for beach lounging, surfing, or even hang gliding. And for foodies, there’s plenty of fresh seafood to be had. Quieter and far more secluded than most other beach towns in the U.S., Duck is certainly worth a visit.

Must do: Check out the barrier island on a bike.

  • Folly Beach, South Carolina

    According to Prevention:

For a continental beach vacation, head over to Folly Beach, one of the best beaches in South Carolina that is just a stone’s throw away from Charleston. It’s more California than South Carolina, with plenty of surfing and a laid-back vibe. But then again, there are marshes and lighthouses that typify the east coast and are best enjoyed with a glass of wine.

Must do: Check out Bert’s Market to grab a snack before hitting the beach.

  • Leesburg, Virginia

Prevention explains why this is the most underrated city in Virginia.

Named after General Robert E. Lee, Leesburg serves as the county seat of Loudoun County, VA, where you can find a plethora of vineyards, wineries, and breweries. This charming southern town has a wide range of restaurants serving local produce, and may just change your mind about American wine on the east coast.

Must do: Check out Walsh Family Wine.

  • Athens, Georgia

Prevention explains why Athens is a must see place.

Architecture buffs will love paying a visit to Athens in northeast Georgia. The antebellum buildings, like the TRR Cobb House, are some of the best preserved in the nation, and well worth a visit. If it’s not too hot, check out the nearby State Botanical Garden of Georgia and Oconee Forest Park, or sip on a local brew from one of the craft breweries in the region.

Must do: Go and see the Taylor Grady House, a Greek Revival mansion.

  • West Palm Beach, Florida

Oh this looks nice and Prevention tells us just how nice.

Rather than going to crowded beaches in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, head over to West Palm Beach instead. Separated from Palm Beach proper by the Lake Worth Lagoon, this city is bustling with fine dining, bars, and culture, like the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where you can check out concerts, plays, ballets, and operas. And yes, the beaches are spectacular.

Must do: Check out the Norton Museum of Art.
