Celebrate the spooky season with the scariest movies from each decade in American film history!  Spirit Halloween stores have popped up in old Buy Buy Baby stores or Bed, Bath, and Beyond stores.  The days are slowly getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler.  Spooky Season is my favorite time of year!  I’ll be watching a scary movie every night in October, as well as new favorites like Hubie Halloween and What We Do In The Shadows.

Some My Favorite Halloween Movies

I don’t like too many of the classic Halloween movies.  Of all of them, I usually gravitate towards the Halloween franchise.  I never really got into the Freddy Krueger movies or the Jason Movies.  Scream has always been my favorite, even when it used to terrify me.  I first watched it with a group of friends when I was 10 or 11 years old.  That same night my parents went out and allowed me to stay at home by myself for a couple of hours.  I remember turning every light on in that house while they were gone and was only going to answer the phone if it was them calling.  Thankfully we had caller I.D.  Another favorite, and more for the cheese factor, is I Know What You Did Last Summer.

My Least Favorite Spooky Movies

Anything with clowns is a hard pass and has been since K-4.  We got to wear our costumes that day and one of the teachers was dressed up as the scariest thing I’ve ever seen at that point in my short-lived life; a clown.  My Mom showed me that picture about a month ago and it still gives me the most uneasy feeling.  It definitely isn’t a movie for me, however Joker from Batman and The Dark Knight Rises has never bothered me.  I actually prefer to watch those movies during this time of the year.  Celebrate the spooky season with the scariest movies from each decade!  Check them out below!

  • Dracula - 1930s

I have never seen Dracula, but I bet this was terrifying in the 1930s.  I actually want to watch this masterpiece in its original version for the full cinematic effect.

  • The Wolf Man - 1940s

Ten years after Dracula, The Wolf Man came out.  While there is actually a slight improvement in technology, the lack of it still makes every bit as terrifying as Dracula looks.  Both movies may have even been ahead of their time.

  • House On Haunted Hill - 1950s

We’re still in the black-and-white film era of horror movies.  I’ve always thought that made them scarier.  Even a possessed skeleton looks creepy!

  • Psycho - 1960s

This one is up there in the top 5 when it comes to killing scenes.  Never trust a man running the family business while still living with his (dead) Mom.

  • Halloween - 1970s

One of my favorites and minus some of the dialogue, this movie still holds up well.  Jamie Lee Curtis is still Scream Queen.

  • The Thing - 1980s

I had never heard of this movie until recently and Kurt Russell’s in it!  Based on the trailer it gives me a little bit of “Upside Down” from “Stranger Things” vibes.

  • Scream - 1990s

My favorite!  It’s a little corny, a little cheesy, scary, and very 90s.  I had the Halloween costume the year it came out and just the mask scared me when I’d come across it in my closet.

  • American Psycho - 2000s

I watched this movie last year and didn’t realize how disturbing it was.  Not in a bad way, but I couldn’t look away.  My wife actually advised me to watch it.  I immediately watched the Chris Nolan Batman trilogy just to get the Christian Bale I know and love back in my brain.

  • The Conjuring - 2010s

I still have never seen this movie.  I accidentally watched The Conjuring 2 first and pieced together what the first one was about.  I still need to watch it for a good jump scare.
