Gas prices are hitting record highs. I was just in the mountains of North Carolina this past weekend, and saw gas prices around $4.29 per gallon. That’s not uncommon. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is now at $4.37.

Around Charlotte, gas prices are getting up around $4.23. It’s definitely not a cheap time to be on the road, but we can’t really help that can we. Summer vacations are coming up, and many of us are returning to work in-office, which means we’ll be paying the price at the pump.

Luckily though, there are some ways that you can make the most out of your gas tank. Here are some tips on how to make your car gas tank go further, according to AAA.

  • Make Sure Your Tires Are Full

Underinflated tires create more rolling resistance with the pavement, thereby reducing gas mileage.

  • Maintain your Vehicle Maintenance

Are you due for an oil or fluid change? AAA manager of repair systems says, “the vehicle is going to operate at its peak efficiency” with good maintenance”

  • Don't Speed

AAA says reducing highway speeds by 5 mph to 10 mph improves gas mileage by up to 14%, and your fuel economy peaks around 50 miles per hour.

  • Plan Your Route In Advance

Planning can make a big difference. You can maximize your efficiency if you plan stops that are closer to the highway, and on the way to where you are going.

  • Coast to Stops

Cars use a lot of fuel going from a dead stop to moving. Therefor, if you coast to stop lights, you may not have to come to a complete stop, and can then save a bit of fuel.
