Bechtler Museum Plans Free 15th Birthday Party in Charlotte
Charlotte’s Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is throwing open its doors for a free birthday bash on Jan. 8. The museum hits 15 years with an evening of live music, drinks, and full access to its art collections. Inside, guests can explore an amazing collection of over 1,400 masterpieces including works by Warhol, Picasso, and Giacometti. Swiss architect Mario Botta designed the museum’s building: a beautiful blend of terracotta and towering glass that lets natural light pour over the artwork.
Live performers will play Swiss compositions by Schoeck and Felder, alongside French and Russian favorites. Jazz enthusiasts should catch the Ziad Jazz Quartet’s performance — members pay $25, while regular tickets cost $30. Clare Rojas’s striking artwork takes center stage through Jan. 19, 2025. Following that, Virginia Jaramillo’s sixty-year artistic journey begins on Feb. 8.
It all started in 2010 with Andreas Bechtler’s donation of his family’s art collection. LeWitt’s “Wall Drawing #995” was the first piece displayed here. Today, the shining “Firebird” sculpture stands guard outside, becoming a beloved symbol of Charlotte’s cultural scene.
Expert guides help visitors understand the artwork better. Thanks to Bank of America, anyone can visit free on Wednesday nights from 5 to 9 p.m. Regular tickets run $5 to $10, but kids under 10 and military members get in free. Students keep getting free access to programs, with new ones coming in 2025. While closed on Tuesdays, the museum welcomes art lovers six days a week, showcasing different exhibits throughout the year.
