People sometimes seem to forget that North Carolina also has mountains and cold weather. When I tell my friends from the North that I live here (which was 10 years ago) they still believe that it’s hot here all year round.

North Carolina’s mountains offer some amazing slopes for skiers and snowboarders. Family-friendly ski resorts in North Carolina have a blend of bunny slopes and bigger-than-life high mountain drops. We wanted to make sure you were aware of the dates those North Carolina ski resorts are opening this season before the cold weather sets in. Check out the full list below and remember to bring your wax and keep those fingers crossed for snow.

  • Appalachian Ski Mountain

    Appalachian Ski Mountain is located in Blowing Rock and is less than two hours away from Charlotte, North Carolina. This year marks the 60th season of the ski resort. They are scheduled to open on Friday, November 19th, 2021 with weather permitting. Tickets and pricing information can be found at their website here.

  • Beech Mountain Resort

    Around two hours and 40 minutes away from Charlotte high in the mountains is the Beech Mountain Resort. Opening Day is November 20th, 2021. This ski resort has a brewery, snow tubing, and even a snow kamp for kids! you can see more on pricing and ticketing here.

  • Cataloochee Ski Area

    The Cataloochee Ski Area will have its 61st season this year. Located about 3 hours from Charlotte in Maggie Valley, this ski resort is full of fun things to do. They will be estimated to open on November 15th, 2021, weather permitting. They are also hiring if you are looking for some snowy work!

  • Ski Sapphire Valley Resort

    On December 18th, 2021 Sapphire Valley will open! This ski and snow sports resort is located at 127 Cherokee Trail in Sapphire, North Carolina. This is about 3 hours and five minutes away from Charlotte, North Carolina. You can find rates and more information here.

  • Sugar Mountain Resort

    Only two hours and twenty minutes away from Charlotte is Sugar Mountain Resort. There is ice skating, snow tubing, and skiing/snowboarding at this location. This season, it is estimated to open on November 15th, 2021 if the weather permits. You can see more here on rates and ticketing.

  • Wolf Ridge Ski Resort

    The forecast is looking good for skis. If you want to travel only two hours and forty minutes away from Charlotte, you can visit the Wolf Ridge Resort. This ski resort is planning on opening on December 10th, 2021. There might be a change in this date depending on the weather conditions, so be sure to check back here.
