These days it's all about the food. The newest, trendiest restaurants, and of course Instagrammable presentation of the food. Typically we think of the term "foodie" as describing those who love gourmet food and restaurants. But it's not just restaurants. These days foodies can enjoy a booth in a food hall, a food truck, or even their own kitchen. Foodies think of eating as a hobby, not a necessity. But like many hobbies, it's not cheap! Prices are rising in grocery stores and restaurants making eating anything, much less high-quality food, very expensive! If you're anything like me you love to travel and try new restaurants. But the rising cost of food in addition to airfare or gas, hotel, and other travel expenses may be hindering that. But the good news, if you're looking for a good foodie destination, is that South Carolina is home to one of the top foodie cities in the US. This is according to a study by WalletHub.

WalletHub took the largest 180 cities in the US to determine the best destinations for foodies in the current economy. They measured each of these locations on 29 indicators of "foodie-friendliness".  Cities on this list appeal to both those who like to dine out or cook for themselves. Keep reading to see which South Carolina city your inner foodie will love most (it ranked in the Top 20), as well as where the other major NC/SC cities ranked. You can read the full study here.

Methodology (According to WalletHub)

In order to determine the best and cheapest local foodie scenes, WalletHub compared 182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across two key dimensions, “Affordability” and “Diversity, Accessibility & Quality.”

We evaluated those dimensions using 29 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions and costs for foodies. For metrics marked with an asterisk (*), we used the square root of the population to calculate the population size in order to avoid overcompensating for minor differences across cities.

Finally, we determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order the cities in our sample. In determining our sample, we considered only the “city proper” in each case and excluded surrounding cities in the metro area.
