We still have a couple of weeks until the official start of fall, but we’re ready to embrace the season. Some autumnal activities seem to get all the attention — we’re looking at you apple picking and pumpkin carving — but there are all kinds of other ways to get into the spirit of the season with family and friends.

This year, why not try one of these out-of-the-box activities to celebrate the arrival of fall:

Build a bonfire

With cooler weather on the way, it’s the ideal time to put that fire pit to good use and make some s’mores.

Write a letter

Reach out to connect with someone you’ve lost touch with by handwriting them a letter.

Bake some bread

Fill your home with the delicious aroma of freshly baked banana or pumpkin bread. And if you’re feeling generous, share a loaf or two with a neighbor.

Indulge in the flavors of fall

Tis the season for all things pumpkin, so treat yourself to a pumpkin spice latte or muffin, or if that’s not your thing, pick up a maple frosted scone or apple cider doughnut instead.

Take a hike somewhere new

Explore a different trail in your area or plan a road trip to hike in a totally different spot where you can get a good view of the changing leaves.

Go for a bike ride

Another great way to see the fall foliage and enjoy the cooler weather is on a bicycle. Whether you’re near a city or out in the country, you can just see so much more when you’re not in the car.

Light fall-scented candles

It might still feel like summer in places with soaring temperatures, but you can trick your senses by burning a fall-scented candle inside.

Make candy apples

Whether you pick them yourself at a farm or buy them at the grocery store, making candy apples is a tasty way to get into the fall spirit. With toppings like caramel, peanuts, Oreos and sprinkles, they’re a guaranteed hit.

Tailgate at a football game

Football fans know that one of the best parts of going to cheer on your team is celebrating with food, drinks and friends outside the stadium before the game.
