Becoming your Parents Parent: Inside Dementia, Part 1

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. And I personally have never been so aware brain health than I am now. My mom has Alzheimer’s disease. And I don’t honestly think anyone could have prepared me for the ebb and flow of this disease. It’s a challenge for my mom, but it ‘s even more of a challenge for the caretaker – usually the spouse or children. It’s me, my brother and my cousin who are taking care of her. I”ll get into that more, but first some fast facts about Alzheimer’s Disease.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association:
An estimated 6.9 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s dementia – more 210,000 of those are in NC
2/3’s of those with Alzheimer’s are women
Alzheimer’s was the 5th leading cause of death among individuals age 65 and older in 2021
