The Arbor Day Foundation has named UNC Charlotte as a 2025 Tree Campus Higher Education institution. This honor celebrates the school's dedication to tree education, investment, and involvement.

"Trees have the power to inspire learning and improve well-being," said Michelle Saulnier, vice president of programs at the Arbor Day Foundation, according to Inside UNC Charlotte.com. "By growing campus green spaces, forward-thinking higher education leaders like UNC Charlotte are cultivating learning communities that also benefit the greater environment."

The Tree Campus Higher Education program launched in 2008. More than 400 campuses across the country now hold this designation, serving over 5 million students.

Institutions must satisfy five core standards to earn Tree Campus status.

  • Schools maintain a campus tree advisory committee.
  • They create a tree care plan.
  • They verify annual investment in tree stewardship.
  • They celebrate Arbor Day.
  • They also conduct a service-learning project that involves students in hands-on environmental work.

The Arbor Day Foundation works as a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. Since 1972, its network has grown to include more than 1 million supporters and partners. Together, they've helped plant over 500 million trees in forests and communities spanning more than 60 countries.

The organization partners with the National Association of State Foresters to run the Tree Campus program, with support from Bartlett Tree Experts.
