Etihad Airways Brings First Middle East Route to Charlotte With March Launch
Etihad Airways will begin nonstop service linking Abu Dhabi and Charlotte Douglas International Airport on March 20.

Etihad Airways will begin nonstop service linking Abu Dhabi and Charlotte Douglas International Airport on March 20. This marks the first direct route connecting the Queen City with the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates-based airline pushed up the launch from its original May date after seeing strong bookings and local enthusiasm.
Charlotte now serves as a gateway for travelers heading to India and Asia. Regional General Manager Alpna Mathews pointed to the city's corporations, financial institutions, universities, and professional sports teams. The airline expects to draw passengers from Raleigh and Greensboro as well.
"Why not Charlotte?" Mathews said to The Charlotte Observer. "It's a great city ... I think there's a lot Charlotte has to offer."
This new service fits into the airline's 2030 Plan, which hopes to double the fleet and add more destinations. Founded in 2003, the carrier flies across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Last year, 22.4 million passengers flew with them — a 21% jump from 2024.
In 2025, the airline acquired 29 new aircraft. That's the biggest one-year expansion in company history. By year's end, 127 planes sat in the fleet.
Passengers will board the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which hasn't been stationed at Charlotte Douglas before. The 300-seat jet boasts bigger windows, a quieter cabin, and burns 25% less fuel than older models. The 13-to-15-hour trip comes with full Wi-Fi, TV streaming, and specialized meal choices.
Business class passengers recline in lie-flat beds and private suites with flexible dining schedules. Travelers can pre-order specialty meat during booking. Plant-based options include beetroot cutlets.
U.S. Customs pre-clearance at Zayed International Airport allows passengers to clear customs in Abu Dhabi before takeoff. They land in Charlotte as domestic arrivals, skipping customs lines to collect bags and head home or catch connecting flights.
The carrier partners with American Airlines to use Charlotte as a hub. Passengers flying from smaller airports can connect with international flights. Baggage transfers straight to the final stop.
A free two-night stopover program invites passengers to tour Abu Dhabi while traveling to places like Bangkok or India. Attractions include the WB Hotel Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi with a 149 mph roller coaster, and Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi.
Flights depart Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with early morning takeoffs from Abu Dhabi and midday return trips. Tickets are available at etihad.com.
