Mecklenburg County reopened Albemarle Park on Thursday. Workers wrapped up $1.1 million in upgrades to the 13-acre east Charlotte site. New additions include trails, a boardwalk, a playground, fitness equipment, a basketball court, and a small picnic shelter.

County crews paved the old dirt trails and repaired the parking lot. The project sought to breathe life back into the space and boost its visibility so residents could enjoy it and feel proud of their neighborhood.

"We're aware of the strong equivalency that exists between parks and quality of life," said County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell at the ceremony Thursday morning, according to Queen City News. "That's why we continue to prioritize, that's why we continue to support, these types of investments as part of our environmental stewardship and equity work."

The county targeted this location as a priority in Park and Recreation's master plan. Funding was allocated across several years. Officials talked with residents to learn what they wanted before construction kicked off in fall 2024. Work concluded this fall.

"This park is what happens when community comes together," said Park and Recreation Director Nick Walker. "Today, as we're cutting this ribbon, we're not just opening a park, we're reopening possibilities for play, for health, for connection, and for pride in East Charlotte."

The county is also preparing to reconstruct and revitalize Albemarle Road Recreation Center, which sits across the street. Residents can visit the webpage for the recreation center project to subscribe for updates and learn when they can share their input.
