Cameron’s DIY Kitchen Remodel
Who doesn’t love a good DIY project, or a kitchen remodel? Okay, I love the planning, and the ending parts of a DIY project. The during part of the DIT projects are always the part when I completely reassess what on earth I was thinking when I planned to do all this.

My husband and I recently bought a house together. There are so many things about the house that we absolutely LOVE, but there were a few things we want to change. And of course, like any person with a delusional amount of confidence, I thought, “I CAN DO THIS MYSELF!”
First things first when it came to our kitchen remodel, we had to paint the walls. After getting some random shelves off the wall, and filling all the holes, we started painting. It’s funny how when you start painting, you think, this is GREAT, and then about 20 minutes into it you are reevaluating all your life choices. Luckily, we tag-teamed painting the kitchen, so the process wasn’t completely terrible. Did we accidentally get paint on the ceiling? Of course we did! But all you need is MORE paint to cover that up.

After painting the entire kitchen walls, we decided our cabinets would look way better white, instead of the wood color they were. Cue a two weekend long process of removing the cabinets, sanding them, priming them, and then finally painting them.
PRO TIP: GET A PAINT GUN

I was able to borrow a paint gun from a friend and it made painting the cabinets so much easier.
Once the new fresh white cabinets were dry, we hung them and changes our the hardware. This arguably made the biggest difference in the kitchen. Originally, we didn’t think the backsplash tile made any sense or matched anything in the room, but after painting the cabinets and walls, BOOM; the backsplash suddenly fit perfectly in the room.
Lastly, we changed out the light fixtures. We swapped out the kitchen island lamp shades to ones from this decade, and got rid of the god awful “boob light.” This process is actually much easier than you may think. A quick YouTube video tutorial, and we were done in less than an hour. Did I break a lightbulb all over the place? Yes…. but we’ll blame that on my clumsiness; I expect much better if you were to try.

Then came the fun part; decorating and organizing! I loved putting together a coffee bar in the corner. Firstly, we don’t have a ton of counter space, so this freed up counterspace that would have been taken up by our coffee maker. It also gave us a cool way to functionally decorate, and the furniture offered us even more storage (which we needed).

I’ll be honest, there were times during this process, we regretting getting started. It was quite a bit of work, and we were uber ambitious and tried to accomplish it during the holidays too (would recommend any other time of the year than the busiest to do house projects, by the way). But we persevered and surely enough, the hard work really did pay off, and our kitchen remodel means even more to us now, knowing that we did it ourself!

Check out the before and after pictures below! This was definitely our biggest project we took on before moving in. The cabinets were hands down the worst part, and I hope I never have to paint cabinets again, but we are so happy with how the kitchen turned out! All this for only a few hundred dollars too!
