Every once in a while, we eat a plate of fried chicken, and we swear it’s the best we’ve ever had. We go on to tell our friends who we're dining with that, "This is better than my mom‘s chicken or even my grandma‘s chicken." Let’s be honest, isn’t that what we’re all looking for? Food that makes us go, 'Wow.'"

A Brief History of Fried Chicken

The first dish known to have been deep-fried was fritters, which were popular in the European Middle Ages. However, the Scottish were the first to have been recorded as deep frying their chicken in fat with breadcrumbs and seasonings, as evidenced by a recipe in a 1747 cookbook by Hannah Glasse.

Southern Fried Chicken

The origin of fried chicken in the southern states of America has been traced to precedents in Scottish and West African cuisine. Scottish fried chicken was battered with seasonings and deep fried in lard, and West African fried chicken added different seasonings and was battered and cooked in palm oil.

Who Does It The Best

While Kentucky and Louisiana top the list of states with the absolute best fried chicken being a southern state, North Carolina has some pretty choice restaurants that serve their chicken just right.

We gathered some places in Charlotte that serve chicken and fried chicken just right. Let’s take a look.

The King's Kitchen

Established in 2010, The King’s Kitchen is managed by Noble Food & Pursuits, and donates 100% of profits from sales to feed the poor in the Charlotte region.

While "every penny" of profit at The King’s Kitchen is donated, each bite of the food served to customers features Chef Noble’s signature “New Local Southern Cuisine.” Specialties include premium Carolina organic produce paired with fine meats like our famous Aunt Beaut’s Pan Fried Chicken.
