Donuts have become a staple in many of our lives. They are the perfect morning treat or just something fun to eat on a Saturday night.

Hanson Gregory invented the donut in 1847 while aboard a lime-trading ship. He was just 16 years old at the time. As the story goes, Gregory wasn't happy with the doughy consistency of the fried cakes served on the ship.

Many early recipes called for the donut to be formed in the shape of a jumble, a circular cookie with a hole in the center. It has also been suggested that this was invented because donuts cook more quickly when they have a hole in the center.

We gathered what we believe are the best donut shops in the Charlotte area complete with reviews.
