(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)If you’re flying somewhere for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s, you should start planning on booking your holiday flights soon. We all know the prices of flights around the holidays are already high, but the longer you wait the crazier those prices will get.
When to Book Those Holiday Flights?
Hayley Berg, a lead economist at travel site Hopper, told CNBC, “The most important thing is for travelers to continue to think about planning now and booking in October.” She noted, “That window of low prices is brief, but it can really pay off.” If you want to fly somewhere for Thanksgiving, booking in early October will be when flights are their lowest. If you want to fly somewhere for Christmas and New Year’s, Berg said the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday is when “pretty much the whole travel industry goes on sale.”
Although booking in advance is the best route, the other unfortunate part is traveling throughout the holidays can be a risk. You never know what cancelations may occur or random things that may happen that you cannot control. With the weather being iffy with snow storms in some parts of the country and the amount of people in and out of the airport, there's no telling what could happen.
The report states that although prices are already a bit higher for holiday flights compared to last year, the best time to purchase is early October when they are expected to hit their lowest. Now, is that a guarantee? Of course not, nothing is - but it's better to start looking and comparing prices now.
As you approach holiday travel, they note a few tips to help you avoid the "domino effect" when it comes to cancellations, delays, etc. The following are the tips provided by CNBC.
- Avoid flying on peak days
- Take the first flight of the day
- Allow time for delays and cancellations
- Broaden your search
