Few things are as inconvenient as visiting the DMV. You either have to wait in line or find an appointment (which is next to impossible). Seriously, I just had to make one. When was the earliest they had? The end of November. And I have to drive 45 minutes for that. It's insane. However, some new NCDMV kiosks are looking to help alleviate some of the problems. Unfortunately not mine!
Announced this week the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is expanding upon its self-service kiosk pilot program. The program places kiosks in grocery stores giving residents access to services outside of the DMV's typical office hours. It also aims to shorten lines and decrease wait times at DMV offices.
In a press release DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said, “This is another example of the work we are doing to shorten lines and wait times by using technology to modernize our customer service and provide more options for customers to get what they need in a timely manner."
NCDMV Kiosks at Six New Harris Teeter Locations:
- Quail Corners (8538 Park Road, Charlotte)
- Town Center Plaza (8600 University City Boulevard, Charlotte)
- Central Avenue (1704 Central Avenue, Charlotte)
- Village District (500 Oberlin Road, Raleigh)
- Cary Village Square (885 Walnut Street, Cary)
- Fuquay Crossing (1371 East Broad Street, Fuquay-Varina)
Three other NCDMV Kiosks Are Also In Harris Teeter Stores:
- The Corners at Brier Creek (4221 Corners Parkway, Raleigh)
- Riverbend Village (4701 Smith Farm Road, Charlotte )
- Highland Centre ( 2800 Raeford Road, Fayetteville)
According to the NCDMV, the following services can be completed at the kiosks:
- Renew a driver's license or ID card (this can't be done if you renewed online last time)
- Order a duplicate or change the address on their driver's license, permit, or state ID card
- Vehicle registration renewals
- Pay property tax on a new vehicle
So from my understanding, most of this just expands access to services that can be done online. As someone who did that last time, this doesn't help with my inconvenience of having to go to the DMV to renew my license. So close!

Data Shows North Carolina Has The Most Dangerous Rural Roads In America
Driving these days can be a terrifying experience. Especially in Charlotte, it seems the drivers get worse and more aggressive by the day and traffic laws are a mere suggestion. But it's actually the rural roads that are of concern in North Carolina. New research by Florida Personal Injury Lawyers Anidjar & Levine looked at 10 years' worth of data including the number of annual miles driven on rural roads and the number of rural road accidents for each state. They used this data to determine which states had the highest occurrence of rural crashes. And it's North Carolina that has the most dangerous rural roads in America.
That's right North Carolina ranked first on this list. And that's not something to celebrate. The state has 70.45 accidents for every billion miles driven. Another interesting statistic is that 44.3% of these crashes occur on roads with a 55 mph speed limit. That's 64.7% higher than the national average which is 26.9%. In some ways, this makes sense as there are a lot of rural roads in North Carolina. But when you consider the sheer size of other states it is a little crazy that we topped the list.
To create this list the researchers at Anidjar & Levine gathered data from 2012-2021 from agencies including NCDOT, FARS, the U.S. Census Bureau, and FHWA. The rural road accident rate was calculated by dividing the annual miles driven on rural roads by the number of vehicles involved in rural road accidents for each state. Keep reading below to see the top five states with the most dangerous roads in America. North Carolina isn't the only Carolina in the top 5 either. Stay safe out there North Carolina. Thanks to our friends at Journo Research for sharing this research with us.
