It's pretty commonplace for new parents to name their children after places that are important to them. Many of these end up being city names for children. While there plenty of cities I wouldn't just give the name of my child, some actually make great names.

For example, I love New York City, but New York? Not exactly name material. Another city near and dear to my heart is Savannah, GA. Savannah works well and is commonly used as a name. Sometimes this works so well because many cities were named after actual people.

Take North Carolina for example. Charlotte was named after Queen Charlotte, and Raleigh after Sir Walter Raleigh. And while the latter was a last name I think it would make a great name as well.

But what are the most common city names for children? Our friends at BeenVerified wanted to know the answer to that question. So in an effort to see which cities have had the biggest impact on baby names, they analyzed Social Security Administration naming data from the past 10 years.

And spoiler alert one of the North Carolina cities I mentioned previously, was the most common of the city names for Children. Here were the top 10:

  1. Charlotte
  2. Austin
  3. Jose
  4. Diego
  5. Antonio
  6. Phoenix
  7. Dallas
  8. Francisco
  9. Memphis
  10. Denver

I actually do love Charlotte as a girl's name, though I have always found it a little odd when you name a child the city you live in (and one of my best friends was named Charlotte growing up). Austin is such a common name that I often forget it even is a city name. I love Dallas as a boy's name as well as Memphis.

States also work well for this. Georgia is a common one, as well as Carolina, Virginia, Montana, and one I love- Dakota.

Thanks to our friends at BeenVerified for sharing their research with us. If you are looking for name inspiration or just curious about more state and city names for children you can see the full study here.
