Research shows that only 4% of Americans can walk or bike to work safely every day, and just 12% can walk to a grocery store. The thing is, it’s not really our fault, a lot of cities in America weren’t designed for walking, so most of us hop in the car to get to our jobs, school and even the closest store. But some places make it easy to get to all those destinations on foot and new research reveals where they are.

The Foot Traffic Ahead report from Smart Growth America is out, revealing the most walkable cities in the U.S.

  • Their team of researchers compared the 35 largest metro areas in the country to find the most “well-connected, walkable neighborhoods.”
  • The report finds that New York City is the most walkable cities in the U.S. once again.
  • In NYC, 73% of all office space is in walkable urban places and 70% of all multifamily rentals are in walkable urban places.
  • Researchers note that while New York is number one, a lot of that ranking has to do with Manhattan and the surrounding areas in Long Island and the southern Hudson Valley are far less walkable.
