Every once in a while, you discover that you’ve actually been saying a word wrong your entire life and you can’t believe you never knew. Names can be especially tricky to pronounce, and it turns out, we mess up the pronunciation of celebrity names all the time.
These are some of the most common celebrity names everyone mispronounces according to BuzzFeed, and the right way to say them.
- Chappell Roan – The singer’s name may look like it should be “Sha-pell,” but it’s actually “Chap-uhl,” like the church. And her last name is “Rone.”
- Travis Kelce – In an episode of their “New Heights” podcast, Travis, his brother, Jason, and their dad, Ed, revealed that their last name, which is commonly pronounced “Kel-see” is really supposed to be a single syllable, “Kels.” The brothers and their mom have always said “Kel-see” and only recently learned that was technically incorrect.
- Hozier – The Irish musician’s name is pronounced like cozier, but with an H, so it’s “Ho-zee-ur.”
- Anya Taylor-Joy – The actress says her first name “Anne-ya,” not “Aun-ya,” but she admits that she struggles to correct people’s pronunciation and even once filmed a whole movie before telling the director they’d been saying her name incorrectly the entire time.
- Paul Mescal – People often pronounce the Irish actor’s last name like the drink Mezcal, but it’s supposed to be “Mes-cuhl.”
- Keleigh Teller – The first name of one of Taylor Swift’s besties and Miles Teller’s wife is a lot more simple than people think, it’s pronounced “Kelly.”
- Tove Lo – The Swedish singer’s name is often said “Tove-low,” but it’s actually “Too-veh-loo.”
- Jake Gyllenhaal – We all think his last name is “Gill-en-hall,” but it’s Swedish and the correct pronunciation is “Yee-len-hyaal.”
- Steve Buscemi – The actor says he doesn’t correct people if they say his last name “Bu-shem-ee,” but he says it “Boo-sem-ee,” and he’s revealed that the proper Sicilian pronunciation should be “Boo-shay-me.”
- Florence Pugh – Some people say the actress’ last name like the dog breed “pug,” but in a tweet, she reveals that it’s actually “like if you were pretending to have a shoot out and you make all the noises yourself … pew PEW pew pew.”

A lot of actors got their start in music videos before they become famous. While trying to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry – or just trying to pay their rent – many actors used their good looks to their advantage to get roles in music videos.
Taye Diggs’ first-ever credited role was in Tupac’s 1995 music video for “Temptations.” The song’s music video does not have any shots of Tupac since he was incarcerated at the time for alleged sexual abuse. Instead, the video features many celebrity cameos, such as Coolio, Ice-T, Issac Hayes, Warren G, Adina Howard, Salt-N-Pepa, Shock G, B-Real, Treach, Jada Pinkett Smith, Marcus Chong, and Kenya Moore. Taking place in a hotel, the video opens and closes with the concierge (Ice-T) complaining about Coolio (a bellboy). The main plot of the video follows the late Coolio while he is working in the hotel.
In the video, Diggs is playing strip poker with Salt-N-Pepa’s Cheryl James and Spinderella. In 1998, Diggs made his film debut in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, which brought him much acclaim and exposure. He later starred in popular and award-winning films and television shows like The Best Man, All American, Brown Sugar, Rent, and Malibu’s Most Wanted.
Another star who was featured in music videos before fame is Friends alum Matt LeBlanc. He starred in Alanis Morissette’s 1991 music video for “Walk Away.” In the video, he’s playing pool with two other men in a bar. He plays Morissette’s boyfriend in the video and arrives late for a date with her. Once he realizes this, he leaves his buddies and tries to reach her by pay phone with no luck. When he finally meets up with her after running around the city, she ices him out. After she teaches him a lesson not to leave her waiting, the couple make up at the end and share a kiss.
When Beyoncé was just 17 years old, she played the love interest in singer-songwriter Case’s late ’90s classic, “Happily Ever After.” This was just one year after Destiny’s Child released their self-titled debut studio album.
