GettyA Wilmington, North Carolina man is suffering from a flesh-eating bacteria. It's left him with a frisbee-sized hole in his back. The hole is near the side of his buttocks the Mirror reports. The police officer has been in ICU since last month after contracting a flesh-eating bacterial infection. Carson Seitter suffered an injury when a fall on September 5th left him unconscious. What’s worse, the minor injury ended up becoming infected. Experts say it's a “deadly flesh-eating bacteria” in his “hip/leg/buttocks region” known as necrotizing fasciitis.
"Flesh-eating bacteria" is a term used to describe the bacteria that can cause necrotizing fasciitis. This is a severe and rapidly progressing soft tissue infection that can destroy skin according to doctors. It can also damage muscle and other underlying tissues anywhere in your body. The term "flesh-eating" is a little exaggerated and can be misleading. It doesn't mean that these bacteria actually consume flesh as their primary source of nutrition.
Carson’s brother Jacob has set up a GoFundMe page to help offset medical costs after Carson has spent the last 35 days in the hospital – five of those days on a ventilator in the ICU. Carson, who’s been a cop for more than a decade, has undergone seven surgeries and is expected to need several skin grafts from the infection. The GoFundMe has raised over 17,000 for his recovery.
Flesh-eating bacteria freak me out, man. I hope this guy gets fully recovered!
