Clearing The Teacher’s List? Don’t Buy These 7 Items A Teacher Says
First-grade teacher and TikToker Katie Alburger shares a video of shopping through Target’s school supply section. It’s here she points out some over-the-top items that are bound to distract kids and make things harder on teachers. Parents may think these supplies are “better,” but Alburger says,
“As a teacher, I’m here to tell you that the more basic you go, the more your teacher will appreciate it.”
She offers these examples for parents to follow:
- “If your child’s school’s file list has a ruler, this is what they’re talking about.” She continued while holding up a plain wooden standard 12-inch ruler. “Not a snap bracelet ruler that is going to end up hurting someone.”
- She also says they don’t need colored, scented glue sticks, because for 40 cents more, you can get 12 plain glue sticks instead of four fancy ones.
- Alburger asks parents to avoid markers and crayons that twist up or are scented, urging them to keep it simple.
- When it comes to pencil boxes, this teacher stresses to get a plain one, not a pop-it fidget pencil box that’s going to become a toy “and your teacher’s worst enemy.”
- For parents that want their kids to be able to express themselves and their individuality, Alburger recommends doing that with backpacks and lunchboxes.
- She concludes, “Basic school supplies that we need in a classroom should not be a toy.”
