Kayla Unbehaun was 9 years old when police said her mother abducted her in July 2017 in Illinois. At the end of an “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix a photo of Kayla, as well as a photo of her mother, were shown and that’s how the flame ignited.

According to ABC Chicago, a Platos Closet store owner in North Carolina saw the episode and recognized the girl at an Asheville shopping center which prompted her to call the police.

Her mother was arrested in Asheville and charged with child abduction, which is a felony. The South Elgin Police Department announced in a news release that the mother was released on bond.
