How do you feel about self-driving cars? While there’s still a lot of interest in them, new research finds that more than two-thirds of drivers are actually afraid of riding in one. According to AAA's annual automated vehicle survey shows that people are becoming more apprehensive of self-driving cars.
In 2022’s survey, only 55% were fearful of being in one, but that’s gone up to 68% this year. That’s a 13% jump, the biggest since 2020. One reason for the increase in the fear of these cars is that one in 10 drivers believe they can buy a vehicle that drives itself while they sleep. AAA assures this just isn’t true, as there’s currently no vehicle available to the public that lets someone fully disengage from driving.
“We were not expecting such a dramatic decline in trust from previous years,” says Greg Brannon, director of automotive research for AAA. “Although with the number of high-profile crashes that have occurred from over-reliance on current vehicle technologies, this isn’t entirely surprising.”
