TikTok says the best flu remedy involves putting potatoes in your socks. It sounds ridiculous, and experts say it’s not real science, but millions of viewers are watching clips of people showing themselves using the trick, and they claim it works.

The instructions are a little more complicated than just “sticking a whole potato in your sock.” You’re supposed to cut slices of potato and place them against the soles of your feet, then wear socks to hold them in place overnight.

The next morning, the slices are dark; some claim it’s because they suck toxins out of your body, but a nutritionist says that it’s body heat and exposure to air that causes “enzymatic browning,” and doctors are saying that potato slices in your socks don’t take the place of a trip to the doctor.
