Levine Museum has collaborated with Grier Heights Community Center and Grier Heights community members. This is going to be a traveling exhibition titled, Grier Heights: Community is Family. The exhibition will highlight over 140 years of community history in Grier Heights, one of Charlotte’s first independent black communities.

It features pioneers like Sam Billings and Arthur S. Grier who laid the groundwork of a tight-knit farming community that became a bustling Black suburban neighborhood alongside stories of Black churches, schools, and traditions that became the cornerstones of life in Grier Heights. This exhibit opens on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Grier Heights Community Center. There will be a free open-house event the same day from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the grand opening among other activities.

The overriding themes of the exhibit are:

  • The strength of the residents' commitment to supporting one another like family
  • Passing on the importance of community responsibility to the next generations
  • Working together to face the community's current challenges

Our community engagement manager, Karen Sutton along with the executive director of Grier Heights Community Center, Tijua Robinsonhave worked hard to bring this together. I would love your help with helping us get the word out and shine some light on the Grier Heights community and history. There are so many archived photos and videos that we can share with you as well. Visit their official website here.
