At 33 acres, The Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Southeast Florida is the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the U.S. Well now the same organization is opening a second facility in Shorter, Alabama. The new shelter is being built at the site of a former greyhound training facility and will be triple the size of their Florida facility at 100 acres.
In a social media post, the organization says the new shelter will have quarantine, rehabilitation, medical, and adoption facilities that will allow them to rescue 5-thousand more dogs each year, doubling their impact. The location will also serve as a transitional hub for other shelters across the Eastern U.S.
Founder and CEO of Big Dog Ranch Rescue Lauree Simmons says in these difficult times the new facility is desperately needed. “Record numbers of dogs are being brought to shelters resulting in overcrowding and a record euthanasia rate for these former family pets,” Simmons explains. “Higher costs for everything from fuel to food are prompting owners to surrender their dogs.” The organization plans to have the new location open in September.
The Right Songs Can Calm Your Anxious Dog On A Car Ride
If you have an anxious dog, you've come to the right place!
While some dogs love to hop on into the car, others get very stressed out in vehicles, which can become an issue if you want to take the whole family, including your furbabies, on a road trip. But it turns out, there’s an easy way to relieve your dog’s stress in the car, and all it takes is a little music.
According to a recent survey, two in three dog owners have an anxious dog who gets stressed out in the car. That’s particularly bad for 75% of people who plan to take their pet with them on their vacation, with 72% taking these trips by car. But according to Sam Sutton, senior lecturer of music at the University of West London, the right music can go a long way toward easing your dog’s stress. He came out with what he calls the perfect playlist to help soothe your dog’s nerves, noting, “reggae and soft rock appear to have been the canine tunes of choice.”
